Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University: Assistant Professor
Department of Political Science

The Department of Political Science at Virginia Tech invites applications
for a tenure track appointment in the field of Political Theory at the level
of Assistant Professor, beginning August 18, 2008.

Required qualifications: Earned doctorate in political science at the time
of application with a clearly defined area of specialization in political
theory, and demonstrated experience in both research and teaching. 

Desired qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates whose
research specialization is political theory, and the candidate must be able
to teach our large introductory undergraduate core lecture course in the
history of political thought. Candidates should have strong, broad training
in political theory, and be able to work within an interdisciplinary setting
with other colleagues in the newly approved cross-college ASPECT (Alliance
for Social Political Ethical and Cultural Thought) doctoral program,
focusing the application of social, political, ethical, and cultural theory
to contemporary political challenges, cultural conflicts, social problems,
and civil societies in both the U.S.A. and abroad
(http://www.aspect.vt.edu).  In particular, we would be interested in
individuals who enjoy interdisciplinary collaborative team teaching and
research.

Position: The successful candidate will be expected to have an active and
substantial research program in political theory, especially early modern,
modern or contemporary political theories.  Applicants also must be able to
contribute as graduate-level faculty to Virginia Tech's ASPECT Ph.D.
program, and to teach large undergraduate lecture courses in political
theory.  The teaching load for this position is two courses per semester.
