Government and International Affairs Program
School of Public and International Affairs
College of Architecture and Urban Studies
Virginia Tech - National Capital Region Alexandria Campus
Globalization and Governance

Virginia Tech’s School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA)
invite applications for the position of Associate or Assistant
Professor in the Government and International Affairs (GIA) program
based in Alexandria, Virginia, beginning Fall 2008. An earlier start
is possible subject to negotiation and administrative approval.

Area of Specialization: The area of specific specialization is open
but should compliment existing strengths within SPIA and GIA. We are
interested in candidates who have broad international experience and
take a comparative approach toward the systemic challenges created by
the intersecting dynamics of globalization, geopolitical change, and
governance. We welcome candidates whose research at international or
global levels of analysis has contemporary relevance for the
theorization and practice of government and international affairs.
Having a particular regional focus will not hinder an application but
candidates should be open to working with students who have broad and
diverse interests. A Ph.D. in Anthropology, Geography, History,
Political Science, Sociology, or related discipline is required.
Appointment at a senior level requires the demonstration of a record
of scholarly achievement.

Institutional and Geographic Setting: Virginia Tech’s School of
Public and International Affairs (SPIA) is based in the College of
Architecture and Urban Studies (CAUS). SPIA operates across a series
of campus sites, the most important of which is the main campus in
Blacksburg, and the National Capital Region, where Virginia Tech has
facilities in multiple locations in the region. SPIA also includes
the programs of the Center for Public Administration and Policy
(CPAP) as well as those of Urban Affairs and Planning (UAP). The
advertised position is for a faculty member working in Alexandria who
can function well in a multidisciplinary setting in a program
environment serving working professional graduate students from the
Washington DC metropolitan region as well as full-time students. The
GIA program offers a Masters in Public and International Affairs
(MPIA) and a Ph D in Planning Globalization and Governance (PG&G).

Applications and supporting documents (except reference letters) must
be submitted online at www.jobs.vt.edu (paper documents cannot be
accepted), reference posting #070319. Complete applications must
include:
1) a full curriculum vitae,
2) three letters of reference,
3) samples of written work (use “other doc” field in on-line
application system), and
4) teaching evaluations, if available.
Applicants must also submit a cover letter that addresses how they
position their work in relation to government and international
affairs, a statement about their current and future research agendas,
and an overview of their teaching experience in this area to
demonstrate their potential for excellence in research, teaching, and
service.

Applicants should arrange for references to send letters to: Dr. Joel
Peters, Chair, GIA-NCR Search Committee, c/o Ms. Krystal Wright,
SPIA, 110 Architecture Annex (0113), Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA
24061; Phone: (540) 231-2291 or send them electronically to Krystal
Wright (krystal at vt.edu), Faculty Search Assistant, SPIA. Questions
about the online application process should be directed to Ms.
Krystal Wright.

Application review will begin April 25, 2007; the search will remain
open until the position is filled.
Virginia Tech has a strong commitment to diversity and seeks a broad
spectrum of candidates, including women, minorities, and people with
disabilities. Individuals with disabilities desiring accommodations
in the application process should notify the Chair of the Search
Committee or the Virginia Tech Relay Service, 1-800-828-1120.
