Ph.D students can still register to the course:
Discourse Theory and Empirical Research:
Politics, ideology and analytical strategies
=================================
From: 2007/06/06 To: 2007/06/08
Responsible: Allan Dreyer Hansen & Torben Bech Dyrberg, Dept. of Social
Sciences and Globalisation, Roskilde University
The idea is that the student should get a grasp of the most important aspects
of the theory and to be able to use discourse theoretical concepts such as
articulation, dislocation and equivalence/difference in analyses in empirical
research. To be able to do that the seminar aims to:
(1) focus on the central arguments in Laclau’s discourse theory;
(2) relate these to other theoretical traditions and
(3) develop an operational discourse theoretical approach.
To illustrate the theoretical arguments, two cases will be presented: one on
new ideological frontiers dealing with identity politics in relation to
right/left, and the other on Jyllandsposten’s Muhammad cartoons and the
crisis it triggered in 2005-2006. We will also discuss meta-theoretical
issues related to models of explanation, subjectivism/objectivism and the
question of relativism.
Ph.D students are welcome to present papers, which will be circulated among
the participants in the seminar.
They should be sent to the organisers not later than Monday 21 May. Further
