[Tps] Faculty Position at UC Berkeley in Comparative Metropolitan Studies

The University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a new
faculty position in the area of Comparative Metropolitan Studies. The
position is tenure track, and will be filled at the assistant professor
level. The appointment will be at a level commensurate with the candidate's
qualifications, experience and accomplishments. The anticipated starting
date is July 1, 2007. The successful candidate must hold a doctorate degree
in geography, political science, sociology, or an allied field, and must
demonstrate potential for high-quality research and teaching. The candidate
is expected to be a scholar whose research and teaching deals with the
intellectual challenges posed by global metropolitan development and
governance, international including United States. Candidates' research
should apply social science methods and theories to problems of city,
regional, and metropolitan dynamics, whether economic, political, social,
and/or geographic, with a view toward promoting interdisciplinary dialogue.
 
The search will be conducted under the auspices of the new Center for Global
Metropolitan Studies with participation from the Departments of Sociology,
Geography, and Political Science, Civil and Environmental Engineering, City
and Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning,
and the Energy and Resources Group. The Center is part of the newly approved
interdisciplinary Metropolitan Studies Initiative. Applicants may read about

The successful candidate will hold a faculty appointment in a department to
be determined based on the candidates preferences and departmental fit. The
candidate also will be an affiliated member of the Center for Global
Metropolitan Studies and will serve as a member of one or more of the
teaching groups of the Metropolitan Studies Initiative. He or she is
expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses under the auspices of
the Metropolitan Studies Initiative, as well as in the home department. A
demonstrated commitment to undergraduate education and advising is
particularly desirable.
 
Special consideration will be given to candidates with strong leadership
abilities. Participation on the Executive Committee of the Center for Global
Metropolitan Studies is expected. Applications must include a CV, a letter
describing the candidates background and interests, brief descriptions of
possible courses, three recent publications, and a one-page statement
outlining a vision for interdisciplinary scholarship in Global Metropolitan
Studies. Candidates should also send a list of three references with
complete contact information, and should also arrange for the search
committee to receive three reference letters from their listed references.
