AFTER gaining independence from Britain in 1947, the Indian Press went from
strength to strength to become a formidable force that set the standards in
the Asian region. One person who was there to see it from the beginning is
Usha Rai, a prominent authority on the Indian media. She has been in
journalism for 40 years. At a recent meeting with senior editors of the New
Straits Times Press, she talked about the current state of the Press and
position of women journalists in her homeland. "Despite being vibrant and
dynamic, the Indian Press is not without its set of problems," said Usha.
