An aerial view of World War II was unveiled Jan. 19, with the posting of
more than 5 million pilot-taken photographs at the Aerial Reconnaissance
Archives, Reuters reports. "These images allow us to see the real war at
first hand," project head Allan William said. "It is like a live action
replay." Among the moments captured are the ruins of Pearl Harbor, Auschwitz
prisoners at roll call, D-Day landings at Omaha Beach and the aftermath of
bombing raids on Cologne, Germany. The images' new online home should be a
welcome setup for historians, students, journalists and the photographs'
caretakers at the National Archives. The photographs "were declassified
years ago, but it takes days to find an individual image," William said.
"Now they have been digitized and will be on the Internet, it takes
seconds."
