Unlike in the developed world, where community radios are run by small
communities, civic bodies, village councils and NGOs, only a handful of
players in the commercial sector are permitted to manage FM radios in India.
Only the Anna University in Tamil Nadu is allowed to run its own FM station
in the country. Basnet, who is based in Kathmandu, points out that Nepal is
the only country in South Asia where community radio is well developed. Of
the 56 radio licenses issued by the Nepal government, 13 have gone to local
communities that broadcast local news and items of interest in their
immediate geographical area. According to Basnet, India has a huge potential
for community radios. "With its diverse cultures and numerous languages,
there is tremendous scope for community radio stations in the country," says
Basnet.
