Indian TV networks expect a sharp rise in advertising revenue this fiscal
year, reversing three years of sluggish growth, as companies step up media
spending in a buoyant economy. With interest rates at three-decade lows and
the economy set to grow by more than seven percent in the financial year to
March, an increase in consumer spending is encouraging companies to
advertise more. Unlike mature TV markets where cable and satellite
subscriptions account for the bulk of revenues, advertising makes up more
than 70 percent of revenues for Indian networks. Indian channels' revenues
in 2003 were estimated at $797 million, with 72 percent from advertising and
the rest from subscriptions, according to research firm Media Partners Asia.
