Postal workers in the tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan will bring modern
technology to remote villages by carrying an Indian-designed handheld
computer on their rounds. The first initiative will be in Bhutan, where 50
Simputers will be given to postal workers who will take the computers on
their delivery rounds. People living in remote villages, who have little
access to information, will be able to look up things like the crop prices
and health information on the computer. The Simputer was invented in 2001 by
a team of scientists at the Indian Institute of Science in the southern city
of Bangalore, to bring modern technology to people too poor to afford
conventional computers.
