If there is a golden mean that lies perfectly between box office dhamakas
and 'arty' cinema then Bollywood has just found it. With more Indian films
doing the rounds of international film festivals, irrespective of whether
they are for masses or classes, we are certainly riding a global current
this season. The most recent to join the long list of Indian films that have
shown at foreign festivals is the cult political thriller - Hazaron
Khwaishen Aisi. Directed by Sudhir Mishra, the film stars Kay Kay Menon and
has been selected for the 54th Berlin Film Festival. But this comes at the
end of a long list of movies that did festive rounds in 2003. Among the
better-known ones there was Rituparno Ghosh's Chokher Bali, Vishal
Bharadwaj's Maqbool and Nikhil Advani's Kal Ho Naa Ho. The trend promises to
continue this year too. Although no Indian nomination might have made it to
the Oscars this year there are a lot of movies that are vying for the
international hotspot. Bhansali's Black, Mani Ratnam's Yuva and Gurinder
Chadda's Bride and Prejudice are among the few that will shine the global
beacon for Bollywood next year.
