Internet company Yahoo! seems to have complied with the Indian government's
Monday order to block the "kynhun" e-Group. But did it have to? Precedent
and legal opinion say no, it didn't. "The Information Technology Act does
not give government the right to block web sites. The Act only talks about
'interception', which means the government can monitor the internet, not
block access," says cyber law advocate Pawan Duggal. Effectively, this means
the IT Act cannot be used to block or restrict people's access to seditious
material.
