In an ongoing effort to expand their global reach and broaden coverage,
newspapers, magazines, television networks and Web sites have been forming
partnerships to share news. Journalists are concerned that this will limit
original reporting because media outlets will rely on each other's stories.
Labor unions also worry this snyergy could cost journalists work as
publications combine resources. Those who support this movement insist
that readers can now conveniently access a wider array of stories and
different viewpoints from fewer sources. Critics of the trend fear that
news outlets will start duplicating each other. "If you have these big
media owners consolidating even more by combining with other big owners, it
really creates bland, one-size-fits-all news," said Linda Foley, President
of the Newspaper Guild. "It's not a good trend."
