Newsmaker: AROON PURIE, Editor-in-Chief, India Today

He is that rarity in the print media business — a promoter who edits a
publication, vetting story ideas, reading page proofs and querying
reporters on information.

But Aroon Purie, the fifty-something editor-in-chief of India Today, is
rare in more senses than one — quite some years ago, he wrote a book for
children.

Since then, Purie has come a long way. His media empire currently straddles
the print, television, radio and book publishing businesses.

His profitable (2003 net profit: Rs 25.95 crore) television company TV
Today Network (which owns the Aaj Tak and Headlines Today channels) is
getting ready for an IPO. The company has already filed a Draft Red Herring
Prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Board of India for an IPO —
shares are to be sold through the 100 per cent book-building route.
