In its effort to capture the market once the conditional access system
(CAS) is rolled out, public broadcaster Doordarshan (DD) is planning to
improve its content and make its operations efficient. Besides
strengthening the news bulletins on DD-1, which is the prime channel in
the public broadcasters bouquet with tremendous reach, it has other
plans up its sleeves too. According to a Prasar Bharati official, DD-1
is changing its ways drastically in the countdown to CAS. Top on the
agenda is phasing out of sponsored programmes in the evening prime time
(9 to 11 pm by its own definition).
From now on, DD will go for
acquisition of programmes in a big way,
 he said. Apart from
acquisition, the channel would also commission programmes for the prime
time band.

TAM Media Research will not report viewership patterns for pay channels
under conditional access system (CAS) unless the penetration of the
set-top boxes crosses the 15-20 per cent mark. TAMs Peoplemeter
currently provides viewership data on terrestrial and cable and
satellite (C&S) homes, which is used by advertising agencies, clients
and broadcasters.
