A channel that does not miss news that matters takes on, over time,
the tag of reliability. But credibility also obtains of things other
than reliability. One major factor that determines credibility is the
people behind the news. News channels backed by strong media houses
obviously come out tops. Among those Indian news channels (here the
focus is on English and Hindi channels) available today, Aaj Tak, by
virtue of its India Today association, scores. But even without a media
house backing, channels can gain credibility. NDTV's new avatars, NDTV
India (Hindi) and NDTV 24X7 (a rather clumsy name to mouth) are rendered
credible primarily by Prannoy Roy, the NDTV boss. He was the first to do
news programming of substance in India (remember The World This Week he
designed for Doordarshan). The sets are quite kitschy, the newscaster,
well, ungainly, and the ads really down market. Sahara news has good
production value, but needs very seriously to up its news selection
process. Also it appears very in-house and overdoes the Sahara logo
thing (including emblazoned ties!).
