[icernet] Post CAS, Sony expects 40% drop in revenue

Sony Entertainment Television may face up to a 40 per cent drop in
revenues in the immediate aftermath of the implementation of the
conditional access system in the four metros from July 14th onwards.
However, any blip in revenue would be temporary and the channel expects
a substantial jump in subscription revenue in the long run under the CAS
regime, said senior company executives.  STAR TV had earlier announced
that it might cut back on its production and promotion budget by as much
as 50 per cent, in anticipation of drop in revenue, when conditional
access regime comes into effect. Zee too had stated that the network
expects a short-term drop in revenue in the CAS regime. Fearing a drop
in revenue, the broadcasters have advocated implementation of CAS on a
city-by-city basis.
