In the age of online music and MP3 downloads, radio, the mass media of
yesteryears is all set to hit back, with a number of private FM channels
wooing the listeners with their sizzling music and local content. From
Bangalore to Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Indore and Delhi, around 20
private radio channels have sprung up, and are offering music-based
entertainment programming 24 hours a day live. Around a decade back,
there were not many TV channels, no internet, mobiles or SMS. Radio
ruled the media world. But focus on other media dwarfed radio. The
government took a long time to deregulate airwaves. But the Indian
entertainment scenario is on a fast track and growing by over eight per
cent a year.
