According to data published by the 2001 Census of India, 64.3 per cent
of urban households own a television set, compared to only 44.5 per cent
who own a transistor. Looking at ownership of these two durables on a
national plane, television is fast catching up with the radio as an
asset to own. Of the approximately 19 crore rural and urban households
in the country, 35.1 per cent of households or 6.7 crore households own
radios, while 6 crore or 31.6 per cent of households own televison sets.
Penetration of TV sets in rural areas is only to the extent of 18.9 per
cent or 2.6 crore households.
