News is a money-spinning business. Big deal! But the most important 
question doing the rounds is how will the pie be shared among the 
increasing number of contenders? The choice of over a dozen channels has 
already set the advertisers thinking. And even as they mull who to bet 
on and by how much, the news market equation itself is poised for a 
radical change in the near future. The implementation of the Conditional 
Access System, recent entry of four new strong players in the market and 
the possibility of five more are bound to change the news landscape 
beyond recognition. Says Sandip Tarkas, president, MPG (south Asia): 
It 
is impossible to predict at present what shape the market will take. It 
is early days yet. All one can say at this stage is we aint seen 
anythin yet.
 A fledgling business proposition? Indeed, but its not 
difficult to predict that the most important factor that will shape the 
future of individual channels will be the way they position themselves.
