News is a money-spinning business. Big deal! But the most important
question doing the rounds is how will the pie be shared among the
increasing number of contenders? The choice of over a dozen channels has
already set the advertisers thinking. And even as they mull who to bet
on and by how much, the news market equation itself is poised for a
radical change in the near future. The implementation of the Conditional
Access System, recent entry of four new strong players in the market and
the possibility of five more are bound to change the news landscape
beyond recognition. Says Sandip Tarkas, president, MPG (south Asia):
It
is impossible to predict at present what shape the market will take. It
is early days yet. All one can say at this stage is we aint seen
anythin yet.
A fledgling business proposition? Indeed, but its not
difficult to predict that the most important factor that will shape the
future of individual channels will be the way they position themselves.
