With the passing of the dot.com boom and the irrational exuberance
surrounding that phase, the information technology and software industry
is at a new crossroads. While the dot.com boom is over, the lessons
learned from this experience will shape the way in which the industry
evolves.

The nature of application software will be influenced by two key
determinants in the coming years: growing business requirements leading
to demand on the application functionality and a fundamental change in
the way software/ applications are developed. With regard to the first,
in India, for example, now that most of the major companies have
implemented a core and robust transactional system, mostly by
implementing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solutions, they are
looking to leverage the data gathered in such systems for getting the
information to make informed business decisions.

Thus Business IntelligenceData Warehousing, Data Mining and Customer
Relationship Managementand the technologies that go behind them will be
key in the coming years. Particular, sectors such as insurance, banking
and telecom have been first adopters of such technologies and will
continue to be impacted by such technologies.
