The government has made it clear that it is necessary for all television
commercials to adhere to the advertising code to escape action by the
concerned authorities. Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha,
information and broadcasting minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said it was
equally obligatory for the channels to keep the ambit of the code in
mind before telecasting a commercial. He said that offending ads were
taken note of either by the ministry officials or the inter-ministerial
committee set up under Section 20 of the Cable Television Networks
(Regulation) Act. Complaints received from viewers are also acted upon,
he said in a written reply.
