Even as the much controversial direct-to-home (DTH) broadcasting is
yet to pick up momentum, it is in news once again. Over its foreign
direct investment (FDI) component. Although two applications have come
in for DTH, there are hindrances in the process of rolling out this
technology: while one is the FDI cap of 20 per cent (total foreign
investment allowed is 49 per cent), another is the sectoral cap.

Technically speaking, DTH refers to distribution of muti-channel TV
programmes in ku band by using a satellite system. In effect, TV signals
are provided direct to the subscribers’ premises without passing through
any intermediary such as cable operator. The advantage of ku band is
that you need a very small dish antenna as compared to large dish
antenna in the lower C band frequencies.Other benefits of DTH: Better
quality of reception for consumers, greater choice of channels, backbone
for IT-enabled services, and an alternative to the cable distribution
system.
