Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) chairman MS Verma said on
Wednesday that making the Internet cheaper to use was on Trais priority
list. From April 2003, basic phone pulse rates will be slashed by Trai
from 180 seconds to 120 seconds, increasing Internet dial-up rates
significantly. A consumer who buys an hour of dial-up Internet access
today at Rs 24, will pay Rs 36 under the new pulse rate. As a result,
dial-up Internet subscriptions are set to become as costly as
always-online cable connections which currently cost between Rs 1,000
and Rs 1,500 a month excluding a one-time installation charge of about
Rs 2,500.
