The number of cellular subscribers in India has almost doubled in calendar 
2002 to cross the one crore mark. The total number of cellular subscribers 
(excluding BSNL cellular subscribers) have grown by 47.7 per cent to touch 
1.04 crore by the end of 2002 from 54.78 lakh subscribers at the end of 
2001. In all, 7.49 lakh new subscribers came on board in December last year 
registering a growth of 7.7 per cent. The growth is marginally higher than 
7.43 lakh new subscribers across the country in November 2002, according to 
the subscription data released by cellular operators association of India 
(COAI).
