The World Bank is launching a pilot project to spread IT literacy among
rural school students in Maharashtra’s Pune district using buses as mobile
computing classrooms. The project, with an initial investment of $ 1
million, will be jointly funded by World Bank, a Japanese aid agency and the
district administration of Pune.

World Bank vice-president and chief information officer Mohammed V Muhsin,
said, “This is part of our initiative to end the digital divide. One of our
current programmes in India is on educating farmers about the benefits of
new technologies. Pune district authority approached us with the project and
we thought it was a good idea to spread IT literacy using mobile computing
unit concepts.”
