[icernet] Offensive images, offensive realities

A fresh controversy has broken out over satellite TV channels carrying
offensive advertisements. The information and broadcasting ministry has
threatened once more to use its power to compel cable-operators to drop
certain channels if they fail to live up to certain standards. It goes
without saying that ‘offensive’, in this context, almost invariably
refers to advertisements, mostly for underwear, particularly those which
show women in suggestive postures. The official view, it is clear, is
that such images undermine the sanctity of womanhood and excite sexual
feelings among young people. There is, no doubt, some truth in this; but
there is also an even greater measure of hypocrisy and denial.
