The first World Summit on the Information Society ended Friday in Geneva
with 170 countries vowing to bring the Internet to developing nations,
Reuters reports. The summit ended with the group drafting a declaration that
committed them to use telecommunication technology, like the
Web and cellular phones, to boost economic growth in poor nations. Though
the summit was successful, the group put off a key decision on whether to
set up a special fund to finance telecommunications infrastructure, Reuters
reports. African nations, which lobbied hard for special funding, were
disappointed by the group's decision.
