After a temporary lull, the first salvo may have been fired towards
another bout of hikes in cable TV subscription rates across the country.
ESPN Software India that airs two sports channels ESPN and STAR Sports,
on Friday announced an upward revision in the rates to Rs 32 from Rs 24
per subscriber home per month, just ahead of the forthcoming Indian
cricket team's tour of New Zealand that gets going from December 12. The
new rates are effective from December 1.
Interestingly, the move comes at a time when the upper house of
Parliament is slated to take up for discussion the amendment to Cable TV
Regulation Act, 1995, that would usher in the conditional access regime
in the country, making it mandatory for subscribers to access pay
channels only through a set top box. The Lok Sabha has already given a
go-ahead to the amendments.
