[icernet] TV programming centred around issues and lifestyles

Sony TV recently made some major changes in its programming. Apart
from introducing a new range of television serials, it wisely pulled out
Madhuri Dixit’s Kahin Na Kahin Koi Hai when it discovered that the
concept of finding a marriage partner on TV wasn’t working with Indian
audiences. “We do try and make any show work and we give it adequate
time to settle down,” explains Sunil Lulla, executive vice-president of
Sony TV.

Of course, when one suggests that most programmes on Indian TV channels
do not really allow viewers to exercise their mental faculties, Mr Lulla
comes up with the old answer that what viewers want is what they get.
“If you think there is a focus on women’s programmes, then it’s because
the audience enjoys watching them,” he says. One would think that at the
end of a stressful working day, the last thing anybody would want is to
watch characters manipulate and fight each other in a TV serial. “Oh, we
all like to see other people fight!” Mr Lulla smiles.

These days programming is centred around very contemporary issues and
modern lifestyles.” This reasoning makes one sceptical about Mr Lulla’s
claim that there is a dearth of good writers for TV. But given that good
TRPs are all that is necessary to ensure advertising support and
viewership, he should not be too worried.
