Prannoy Roy's NDTV and Star India divorced in March 2003, and NDTV plans
on going it alone by launching two news channels, one in English and the
other in Hindi. Aroon Purie's TV Today (part of the Living Media group)
also has announced plans to launch an additional news channel, other
than its popular Aaj Tak Hindi channel, though Living Media is cagey
about revealing whether the new chennal will be an English or a regional
language one.

Among the other two new chennels in the air will be a Hindi news channel
from the Sahara stable. Though the group initially talked about starting
six to seven news channels, it is now expected to kick off at least one,
perhaps by next year. Finally, the Dhoot-owner consumer durables major
Videocon also promises to launch a business-cum-general news channel
under a newly set up company, Bharat Business Channel. "We've yet to
decide the name of the channel, though it will be launched early next
year," says Videocon chairman Venugopal Dhoot.

Clearly, the race to set up news channels is heating up.
