Now that the emotional floods have somewhat subsided in Cauvery, we can
take a cool look at a tributary of the crisis __ the
filmstar-for-politics syndrome. Why did filmstars get involved, and not
school-teachers or cricketers or writers or artists?
One possibility: Passions have a populist edge and filmstars go where
passions catch fire. A more personal reason: Because they attract mass
followings some stars tend to imagine that they are ordained by God to
be statesmen leading nations. Even Shatrughan Sinha and Vinod Khanna
think they are modern Jawaharlal Nehrus. Amitabh Bachan thought so too,
but he quickly came to his senses.
