The Indian media has traditionally shown tremendous restraint in
publishing reports or statements that may cause communal or social
disharmony. The gatekeeping has been exemplary. What has made the effort
more laudable is that the Indian media has never had a written code of
conduct unlike several western countries where such a code is placed on
every news desk. However, today the Indian media, especially the
English-language media, seems to have become a victim of its own
unwritten rules. Self-styled Hindu nationalists have taken advantage of
the media's belief in fair reporting and in giving fair representation
to all points of view. They now use the media's reach to take their
divisive agenda to the furthest corners of the country.
