After the bouquet regime in satellite television, it is a repeat in the
radio world. Although US-based satellite radio service WorldSpace
decided to introduce pay channels a few months ago, it is only now that
the company is capturing the bouquet essence, just like in television.
As part of the bouquet deal, it has decided to reward those who came to
this platform early and get new customers hooked on to it with freebies.
But the message that is loud and clear: Like television, even radio is
all set to turn into a pay media.
The first satellite radio service of the world, WorldSpace rolled out
the pay channel initiative first in India. But now, it is all set to
move to other markets including Africa and Europe. WorldSpace offers its
services to various parts of the world through two satellites AsiaStar
and AfriStar At a time when TV and Internet are turning pay, why should
radio lag behind, WorldSpace argues. So far, a couple of satellite radio
services with bouquet offerings have shifted to the pay regime.
