Bollywood remakes of Hollywood and southern Indian films have inundated
theatres over the past few months. But a new breed of filmmakers is
looking beyond readymade plots.

Apart from NRI director Somnath Sen's Leela about an Indian professor
who has an affair with her Indian American student, a whole lot of
filmmakers are ready with a crop of creatively alive work.

This includes an adaptation of Urdu-Punjabi litterateur Amrita Pritam's
Pinjar, starring Urmila Matondkar.

The trend towards seeking inspiration from Indian literary sources had
been lying dormant until Sanjay Leela Bhansali successfully adapted
Saratchandra Chatterjee's Devdas.
