Teaching Lexical semantics from a Pedagogical Perspective
Euiyon Cho, Ph.D.
(Dongguk University)
This paper presents the account of a procedure I devised for teaching
lexical semantics
with the collocation corpus from a pedagogical perspective, drawing on
current ideas of
lexical semantics and corpus-based foreign language teaching.
Based on the idea that ¡®meaning is use¡¯ and ¡®the unit of meaning in the
study of language
in use is not a single word but a phrase¡¯ (Stubbs 2001), computer tools are
used to help students
analyze collocations to find out usage of words as well as figuring out
what sense of a word is
used in context and whether its semantic prosody is positive or negative.
The relevance of language learning and language teaching directly arises
from the fact that the corpus
of collocation is used to work with students.
Since, in a concordance-based CALL, learners play the role of a linguistic
researcher (Johns 1997),
teaching lexical semantics with the aid of the collocation corpus will also
help the learners become
involved in a research training program.
