Dear ASIA CALLers & 2003 Conference participants!
I'm very glad to write to you again, but sorry to let you know Chair's poor
decision on 2003 Conference.
I'm sure you are aware of the problem with SARS in various countries,
including US, Canada, Singapore, Vietnam, Hong Kong, China and even
Thailand.
Many members and speakers are worried about traveling and about coming into
contact with SARS carriers. And the Thai government has just announced that
all travelers from SARS-affected countries are to put on masks while in
Thailand. We cannot imagine joining to a conference with a mask on.
50 percentage of our participants are from SARS-affected countries. For a
couple of weeks, I paid much attention to sharing information with members
and getting a wise decision about the 2003 conference in Bangkok.
Now as Chair of ASIA CALL I declare that we will postpone ASIA CALL 2003
Conference to a date later in the year.
We would like to save ASIA CALL members first. We will release the following
news in turn through our listserv [CALL News] &[LINGUISTLIST]. I hope you
are all happy and safe enough from unexpected AMBUSH: SARS & War in Iraq
until we meet again.
Globally yours,
Larry Chong, AISA CALL Chair
